You don’t have to be in San Diego very long before you hear that you should go eat (or should I say feast) at Phil’s BBQ. The lines are often long but so worth the wait. When I heard that Phil’s was coming to Petco Park and the San Diego Padres this year, I wondered if they could transfer that same atmosphere and fantastic BBQ to the ballpark. Well, that question was answered with a resounding YES! The Phil’s crew literally “backs the truck up” each day … filled with fresh food that is ready to be prepared on site. They grill the ribs right there at the ballpark.
Another secret to their success is simplicity. Phil’s offers only three options at the ballpark but they are great ones: Rib Dinner, Pulled Pork Sandwich, and Tri-tip Sandwich. Each is served with Phi’s signature coleslaw and they also have a variety of beverages to accompany your meal.
On our visit, we sampled the BBQ Broham (pulled pork) and El Toro (tri-tip). Each had a generous portion of meat and it was very lean. The BBQ sauce was terrific and the coleslaw was fantastic. If there was one suggestion it would be that the buns were a bit tough … with a “sandwich” of this nature, it is challenging to make this a traditional in-your-hand sandwich and thus the need to use a knife and fork … but “plastic ware” at the ballpark makes it hard to cut through a bun of this density. That said, the beef and pork are outstanding and truly eats great without the bun!
But you don’t have to take my word for this being a great place to eat because Phil’s BBQ El Toro tri-tip sandwich won the 2013 Stadium Food King Challenge … and we participated DAILY in the voting! Phil’s had some tough competition: the D-Back’s Sonoran Dog, the Brewers’ pulled port parfait, and the Royals’ Cheesy Brisket-acho in the final round.
So as the baseball season comes to an end, we want to make a somewhat late “welcome” to Phil’s and hope they will be back next year. There are still several games left so be sure and visit them … they are located in the Park-in-the-Park adjacent to the Candy Factory in Right Field. And a big THANK YOU to Phil’s for the terrific BBQ Set promotional item on 9/20/13 – it’s classy – just like you! Welcome to the Padres family!
