A Visit with Norm Sherry

During the Salute to the 1984 Team Weekend, we were fortunate to see Norm Sherry in the Team Store. We took a chance and asked him if he would be willing to complete a questionnaire that we had prepared (in case we met any alumni).  He was so very gracious and told us that he would be happy to do so.

We are very honored to share a bit of background and his responses with you.

Norm Sherry played for parts of five seasons with the Dodgers and the Mets.  He was the pitching coach for the San Diego Padres from 1982-1984 and worked with young pitchers like Eric Show, Mark Thurmond, Andy Hawkins and Dave Dravecky.

Padres360 – What was your proudest moment in your MLB career?

Norm Sherry – Being able to help my brother (Larry Sherry) in his pitching career.  Telling Sandy Koufax to not try to throw the ball as hard as you could, which helped his delivery and he went on to pitch with great control.

Padres360 – What special memories do you have about the 1984 Padres club?

Norm Sherry – It was a year that just kept getting better.  Everyone made their contributions.  It was a great thrill to be on the team and go to the World Series, even though we did not win.

Padres360 – Who was your favorite player when you were on the team?

Norm Sherry – I didn’t have one favorite, but I did like a few players: Terry Kennedy, Dave Dravecky, Eric Show, Garry Templeton, and Tim Flannery.

Padres360 – What path did you take after you retired from the MLB.

Norm Sherry – I stayed in the game as a Minor League manager.  Three years in A ball for the Dodgers, then with the Angels as a coach and Minor League manager.  I coached for the Expos, Giants, and of course, the Padres.

Padres360 – What advice would you give Minor League players today?

Norm Sherry – Don’t be afraid of making mistakes because that is how you learn.  Play the game with all of your desire and know that you gave it your all even if you don’t make it to the Majors.

We hope you enjoyed what Norm had to share with us – we know we certainly loved hearing from him!
